Whether you use the internet, your smartphone or even an “old fashioned” phonebook to look up a phone number, it has only been in recent years that the convenience of looking up a person or business by their phone number has really become popular and very convenient to use. It is called reverse phone search and it lets you find out information to varying degrees about an unknown missed call or unknown phone number on your phone bill, for example.
Most people are too busy or simply don’t want to be hassled by unwanted telemarketing calls, probably the majority of the unknown numbers that show up on home telephones or cellphones. Most the time they’re easily forgotten. But if you have family or friends spread out across the country and you’re not always sure who’s calling, but would like to know, then the service can be very helpful in allowing you to return calls to those you’re interested in talking to.
With a simple entry of the area code and number, most reverse lookup sites will provide the city and state immediately, as well as whether the number is a land line or cellphone number. If that is enough clue to who might be calling, you’re good to go, but if you want more exact details, you can usually get the caller’s name, provided their number is not unlisted (for residential lines), and not all cellphone caller IDs are available either, although many are, especially if you use a reverse cellphone lookup site. The information is not always free, but typically it’s not more than a dollar or two, and many sites offer monthly or annual rates for unlimited use.
This directory was originally distributed to phone companies, public libraries and law enforcement. The reverse phone directories that law enforcement offices receive differ in that there are no unlisted numbers, thus allowing them to easily trace the location of all incoming calls. It wasnít until around the year 2000 that reverse phone lookups began to migrate online. These new online versions were much more convenient in a lot of ways. For instance, with the printed directories, all that was available were local numbers, so no help at all if your unknown number was from a different geographical area in the United States and definitely useless when it came to international numbers. With online lookups there are no limits as to where you can search. And since most of these reverse phone lookups are ad driven they are completely free to use.
There is, however, some controversy surrounding reverse telephone lookups. In Australia there have been actual lawsuits concerning them. In the United States there have not yet been any lawsuits but it has raised quite a few peopleís concern regarding privacy. The fact that anyone anywhere can go online and find out your name and number with just your phone number makes many people uncomfortable. Itís not surprising though, as any useful tool will always have its drawbacks as well.
So don’t be in the dark or miss important calls that you may not recognize. With just a quick search you can often find the information you need to make an informed decision about returning a call or answering it the next time it rings on your line.
